At Koolah Creek Highlands, we breed exceptional registered Highland cattle for stud, show and companion homes.
Our breeding program is centred around the things that matter to us most: exceptionally good temperaments, sound structure, quality pedigrees and traditional Highland character. Just as importantly, we put a huge amount of time into handling our young cattle so they leave us quiet, confident and easy to manage.
We are registered breeders with the Australian Highland Cattle Society and are based at Langley Vale on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Deirdre is a young registered Purebred cow with plenty of productive years ahead of her, and one we would happily retain in our own breeding herd.
She is calm, paddock approachable, comes when called and will happily eat from your hand. She was halter trained as a calf and is exceptionally straightforward to manage.
Deirdre is currently in calf to Larimar of Amrabull Park, our 2024 AHCS National Show Supreme Exhibit. This is a mating we are very excited about.
Her first calf, Esme of Koolah Creek, has already gone on to perform exceptionally well in the show ring, including Supreme Highland Exhibit and Supreme Small Breeds Exhibit at Gatton Show.
Deirdre is DNA parent verified, NT821 free, PI negative and up to date with vaccinations.

Not everything we sell makes it as far as the website.
Most of our cattle are first offered privately to our Cattle Sales Mailing List, and many are sold before they are advertised publicly. We breed between 15 and 25 calves every year, and retain only a few for our breeding program. We have cattle for sale at various times throughout each year.
2026 Calves
Our 2026 calf crop is currently growing out and being assessed.
We retain calves for some time before making final decisions about which animals will stay in our breeding program and which may become available. Selected heifers, steers and occasionally young bulls may be offered as they mature.
Pet Steers
We expect to have a small number of very quiet, well-handled pet steers available over the coming months.
How Our Cattle Sales Work
When we have cattle ready to offer for sale, the mailing list is normally the first place we share them. This gives those who have taken the time to register the first opportunity to view the cattle available and arrange a visit before we advertise them more widely. The majority of our cattle are sold this way.

2. Review the cattle available
Our sales information includes the details relevant to each individual animal, including registration, pedigree, temperament, health information, breeding status where applicable and price.
3. Meet us and the cattle
Where practical, we prefer buyers to visit Koolah Creek before purchasing. For interstate buyers or where distance makes this difficult, we can arrange a video inspection.
4. Confirm the right fit
Finding the right home matters to us. We are always happy to talk through your property, existing cattle, experience and what you're hoping to find.
Once we are both comfortable that the animal and home are a good match, the sale can proceed.

What We Sell
Stud Heifers
Selected AHCS registered heifers are available to stud and show homes each year.
We assess our heifers over time for temperament, structure, pedigree, breed character and the strengths they may contribute to a breeding program. We take a considered approach to matching individual heifers with studs where their genetics and attributes are likely to complement the existing herd and make a meaningful contribution.
We are happy to discuss your breeding goals, existing females, preferred bloodlines and the direction of your program to help identify the most suitable fit. Full registration, pedigree and genetic information is provided for each animal at the time of sale.
Stud Bulls
We only sell bulls that meet the high standard that we would use in our own breeding program here at Koolah Creek. Potential stud bulls are assessed over time for structure, temperament, pedigree, breed character and suitability for breeding. Only a small proportion of our bull calves are retained entire; the majority are castrated and sold as steers.
Registered bulls are offered only to suitable breeding homes and are not sold as paddock pets or to inexperienced first-time cattle owners.
Breeding Females
Registered breeding females are only rarely offered for sale from Koolah Creek.
Our cows have been carefully selected and form the foundation of our breeding program, so proven females are extremely valuable to us and are generally retained within the fold.
On the rare occasion that we do make a breeding female available, it represents an opportunity to purchase an established animal from our program, with known pedigree, temperament, reproductive history and progeny behind her.
Pet Steer & Heifer Calves
Highlands make wonderful paddock companions for suitable acreage and hobby-farm homes. We regularly have a small number of very quiet, well-handled steers available for companion homes.
From time to time, we may also offer a heifer as a pet where she does not meet the standard we require for our own breeding program or for sale as a stud female. These heifers can still make exceptional companion cattle and are offered on the basis that they are not intended for breeding.
Our pet cattle receive the same focus on temperament, handling and preparation as the animals retained within our stud program. They receive extensive handling and socialisation before leaving us and are taught to lead, stand tied and accept normal handling. Our aim is to send them to their new homes friendly, confident and easy to manage. Highlands are herd animals and cannot be kept alone. If you don't already have cattle, you will need to purchase a suitable pair.
Why Koolah Creek?
Breeding with purpose - our breeding decisions consider structure, pedigree, temperament, breed character and the future of the animal as a whole.
We use carefully selected Australian and international genetics, including artificial insemination and embryo transfer, where those genetics add something worthwhile to our program.
Temperament matters - quiet cattle are safer and more enjoyable to own.
Temperament has always been one of our strongest selection priorities. We want cattle that are naturally calm, sensible and pleasant to work with, not cattle that simply tolerate handling because they have been forced to.
We put the time into them - our calves receive regular handling and positive experiences with people as they grow.
Once weaned, they remain with us for further training before leaving for their new homes. By that stage, our young cattle are accustomed to normal handling and our calves are halter trained.
Health and husbandry - cattle leave Koolah Creek with their husbandry and health records, identification and movement documentation in order.
Ongoing support is always available to our buyers.
By the time they leave, our calves are:
gently weaned
accustomed to regular handling
halter trained
comfortable being brushed and patted
NLIS identified
supplied with the required movement documentation
vaccinated and treated for parasites as appropriate
accompanied by their husbandry and health information
They also leave with their own halter and lead.
We put a lot of time into our calves before they leave us. It makes the transition easier for the calf, easier for their new owner, and gives both the best possible start.
Before You Enquire
Owning cattle is a significant commitment. Please make sure you have suitable facilities and have done some research before enquiring.
At a minimum, Highland owners need:
suitable acreage and pasture
secure cattle fencing
a Property Identification Code (PIC)
access to appropriate cattle handling and restraint facilities. Basic yards and a crush are essential.
a plan for feed, water, health care and routine husbandry
other cattle for companionship. Cattle are herd animals. We will not sell a single animal to a property where it will have no bovine companion.
If you are new to cattle ownership, that's completely fine. Many of our buyers are.

Price Guide
Our prices reflect the quality of the individual animal, the genetics behind them and the considerable time invested in breeding, handling, training and health care before they leave Koolah Creek.

Miniature Highland Cows - Koolah Creek Position Statement
Koolah Creek does not breed, own or sell miniature Highlands. Koolah Creek is opposed to the breeding of ‘Miniature"‘ Highland Cows on ethical and welfare basis.
Our mature cattle are relatively moderate in size compared with many beef breeds, but we do not select cattle simply to make them smaller.
Temperament, sound structure, health, fertility and traditional Highland character are far more important to us than achieving an arbitrary height.
If you're looking for manageable cattle for a smaller acreage, a well-bred traditional Highland already has plenty to offer.

Our availability changes throughout the year.
We don't release every calf at a set age because we need time to assess what we will retain in our own breeding program. The best way to find out when cattle become available is to join our Cattle Sales Mailing List.

Our calves remain with their dams until they are ready to be weaned, generally at around 6–8 months old.
They then stay with us for further handling and training before leaving for their new homes.
We do not sell bottle babies, poddies or unweaned calves.

Only if you already have other cattle.
Highlands are herd animals and need bovine companionship. If there are no cattle already living on your property, we will require you to purchase an appropriate pair.
Other livestock such as horses, sheep, goats or alpacas do not replace the need for cattle companionship.

Yes.
We prefer prospective buyers to meet us and the cattle before purchasing where practical. Visits are by appointment only.
If you are interstate or unable to visit because of distance, we can arrange a video inspection.

Yes, we offer delivery.
Our cattle have gone to homes across Australia. We can assist with organising suitable livestock transport and the paperwork required for the movement.
Individual state entry requirements remain the responsibility of the purchaser, but we're happy to help where we can.

We are just 2 hours drive from Newcastle, and 3 hours from the northern side of Sydney.
